A fine American parcel paint decorated giltwood and marquetry inlaid side chair
Executed by Herter Brothers, New York, most likely commissioned for the Mark Hopkins residence, San Francisco
circa 1878
The rectangular back inlaid with a butterfly and flowering branches (later over-upholstered), within turned reel borders and turned supports with carved foliate spandrels, the flared rectangular seat raised on tapered cylindrical legs joined by reeded rails, decorated overall in the recesses and in sienna, impressed on the underside of the side rail 4660.

  • Another chair in this pattern was exhibited in Herter Brothers- Furniture and Interiors for a Gilded Age, a traveling exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the High Museum of Art, Atlanta and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Voorsanger, Frelinghausen and Howe, Harry Abrams, Inc., 1994, no. 25, page 177.

    A matching chair, thought to be the mate to the present example, is now in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum, Marie Bernice Bitzer Fund, 2000.4.
